Partnership Goals

ALL CLIMBING COMPANIES are WELCOME to PARTICIPATE with the PARTNER for RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL PROGRAM


QUALIFICATION for KILIMANJARO OUTFITTER PARTNER
Ø  Company must have TALA (Tanzania Licensing Act) license
Ø  Minimum performance standards met
Ø  Monitoring required for at least 1 season to qualify
Ø  Monitoring every season to continue to qualify
Ø  Data entered into computer for grading at the end of each season
Ø  At least 85% performance level to qualify to be listed as Partner company

Cooperation with Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP)
Ø  Submit climb schedule every month
Ø  Check by investigative porters
Ø  50-100 surveys per season
Ø  Communication with KPAP regarding follow up on any problems identified by KPAP
Ø  Meeting with porters and Directors once per year with KPAP representative in attendance

IMEC/KPAP Partner Program Performance Standards

      1.    Salary
Ø  Pay the following minimum wages:
§  Porters: 20,000Tsh/day
§  Guides: 40,000Tsh/day
§  Assistant Guides and Cooks: 30,000Tsh/day
Ø  Payment within 2 days of descent (Sundays and holidays excluded)

      2.    Tip
Ø  Transparency in the tipping procedure ensuring that the porters receive the amount intended for them.  Different methods include:
§  Climbers pay directly
§  Climbers give tip money to guide in the presence of the crew and announce amount for porters
§  Separate envelope for porters in which total amount of tip and amount per porter is indicated
§  Tip sheet in which tip amounts for all crew are outlined

      3.    Bag Weights
Ø  20kg for the weight the porter carries for the company

      4.    Meals
Ø  3 meals/day
Ø  Adequate amount of food

      5.    Tents
Ø  Good quality
Ø  Ground sheet provided
Ø  Adequate sleeping space

      6.    Resupply
Ø  KINAPA Regulation:  Salary payment of 20,000 every camp + food and transport.

Company will assist with:

1.    Recommending tip amounts so that porters have a proper living wage from salary and tip.
2.    Informing crew of company’s requirements regarding gear and equipment.
3.    Instituting a procedure for descent of ill crew person.
4.    Ensuring that there is fair assignment to climbs.
