IMEC Partnership for Responsible Travel

1. Promote public awareness of proper porter treatment: Tour Operators who partner with IMEC should abide by IMEC's porter guidelines as well as add them to the company's website. Doing so will help improve public awareness of proper porter treatment.

2. Ensure that local operators maintain fair labor practices: Require that local ground agents adhere to IMEC's recommended guidelines and agree to be monitored by IMEC's local projects.

3. Provide additional clothing to porters: Participating in IMEC's Courier Program or bringing extra equipment to loan through IMEC or a company lending program helps with the proper clothing of porters. Encourage local companies to perform equipment checks and provide gear if necessary.

4. Ask that clients fill out post-trek evaluation forms located on IMEC's webpage: This will be a way to learn about any cases of neglect or abuse by local ground agents.

5. Encourage clients to meet and engage with their porters: Practicing English with the crew will help them improve their language skills.

6. Promote local companies hiring porters as permanent or semi-permanent: This helps establish more dependable forms of income for porters and reduces instances of porter abuse.

7. Support local porter efforts: Take your clients to visit local porter organizations including IMEC's local offices in Kilimanjaro and Kathmandu . This will help your clients develop a new respect for the men and woman that support the trekking and climbing industries. Supporting these organizations will also directly benefit porters through the development of their clothing lending programs and English, First Aid, and empowerment classes.

8. Use porter guidelines as a marketing advantage: Make porter guidelines a marketing tool to help sell your organizations services.
